THREE libraries in the Bromsgrove district have become the first in Worcestershire to join the Dementia Action Alliance.

All staff members at Bromsgrove, Rubery and Catshill libraries have completed the Dementia Friends training over the last 12 months, and the rest of the county's libraries are expected to follow suit within the following year.

The membership acknowledges the facilities' commitment to welcoming dementia patients into the libraries, while also tailoring their services to meet individual customer needs.

The libraries' members can now borrow from a dementia book collection, which includes information and advice, support for relatives and personal stories.

Part of the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme, the collection also offers guidance to people suffering with stress, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member with responsibility for communities, said: "Health and wellbeing is one of the five key priorities for the Library Service so it is particularly important for us to be members of national organisations such as Dementia Action Alliance.

"Through the membership there is recognition that we are committed to welcoming people with dementia into our libraries and supporting relatives and carers.

"We are really keen to make sure the local community is aware of the support provided through our libraries including our Books on Prescription collection."

Borrowers can be introduced to the Reading Well titles by their doctor, but may also enquire with library staff.

Members can borrow any of the books in the scheme for up to three weeks at a time. There is also a free reservation facility.
