EVESHAM artist, Michael Barnard, has drawn a picture based on his memories of the local asparagus industry.

The pensioner says it was drawn in celebration Evesham asparagus, known as "asum gras", being granted protected food status.

He said: "What tremendous news that at last our asum gras has been granted protected food status. This news brings back so many memories of my family's involvement with asparagus."

His picture is a glimpse of a youthful Mr Barnard himself, helping to package asparagus with the use of willow twigs, around 70 years ago.

Mr Barnard said: "May our 2017 'gras season' be a great success, bathed in glorious sunshine."
