A GAS leak has caused traffic chaos after roadworks were erected to carry out repairs.

National Grid do not expect to complete the works until Friday at the earliest, after receiving reports about the leak on Sunday, January 15.

Two-way temporary traffic lights have been erected opposite the former Crown and Anchor pub in Hylton Road, Worcester.

Some drivers experienced delays as a result of the works and questioned why they keep happening in the road.

Bill Rowe, who lives near Hallow, said he was caught in the traffic on Hylton Road yesterday (January 16).

"It took me 55 minutes to get from Hallow to St John's. It was 9.25am this morning and cars were backed up as far as I could see," he said.

"I'm absolutely sick of it. How many times have they done that stretch now? It's pathetic. It's the same road works over and over again.

"Other drivers were getting frustrated. It's happened seven or eight times now. When they find the problem the first time they should cure it.

"Also Sidbury is down to one lane again. All the traffic is backing up."

The lane closure in Sidbury, Worcester, has been caused by Severn Trent who are fitting footway slabs as part of a new water connection.

A spokesman for National Grid said they are required to repair gas leaks.

"We do apologise for any inconvenience being caused. They are still digging down to find the exact location of the leak," the spokesman said.

"Our priority is safety to local residents. There are pipes where a number of escapes happen and we do look at those."

The spokesman added that they hope to have work complete and the traffic lights removed by Friday, January 20.
