THE Happy Patchers aim to bring smiles to the Old Quarter when they take part in a street party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a popular business.

Clifton Street Washeteria and Duvet Centre is marking the milestone this Saturday (August 26) with a bit of a do for customers and residents in the area.

The celebratory event, which will run from midday until about 4pm or 5pm, will include tea and cakes and a raffle plus music from The Happy Patchers - a group of Old Quarter optimists who have been trying to beautify and bring smiles to the area by sewing and pinning up yellow patches with upbeat phrases on them.

Hereford Times:

Trish Flannery, one of The Happy Patchers, said: "We'll be there - sewing and singing happy music."

She said the event is not just for customer but anyone who is prepared to "come along happy".

The Patchers, who sprung to life earlier this year as an anonymous group intent on "cheering the area up", meet in the Longlands Tavern, Western Road, every Monday night.

Businessman Tony Cooper started the successful laundrette business five decades ago and it is currently run by co-owners Richard Dowen and Deb Price (pictured above left with Sarah Keating and Janey Beasley).
