HUNDREDS of Sunday school children and workers descended on Blackheath for an annual celebration.

The fourth National Sunday School Day and Parade was held at Beeches Road Baptist Chapel in Rowley Regis on May 13.

More than 470 pupils and staff from schools from across England and Wales, including a large contingent from the Black Country, took part in the event.

The service included hymns, a children's choir, scripture reading and a gospel sermon by Pastor Robert Cordle of Harrold and Carlton Baptist Chapel in Bedfordshire.

At the end of the service, they gathered in the chapel car park where they unfurled banners and moved out on to the High Street to begin a march to a park, with a brass band leading the way with hymns.

The parade ended with a picnic lunch, old-fashioned games such as an egg and spoon race and a coconut shy followed by an awards ceremony.

Next year's National Sunday School Day and Parade is scheduled for May 12, 2018.
