POLICE cordoned off a Lower Gornal road this morning after a resident found a suspected Second World War shell in their garden.
Officers were called to Stickley Lane at around 11.20am after the device, which is thought to be an old artillery shell, was unearthed.
As a precaution, the road was closed and some houses were evacuated prior to the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), who assessed the device.
Normality resumed at around 2pm, when the bomb disposal team left the scene and the cordon was lifted.
