SOME 500 people turned out on Saturday evening for the annual Colwall wassail.
The wassail is an ancient English ceremony meant to 'wake up' the trees of the apple orchards and ensure a fruitful harvest.
The Colwall event is now in its tenth year, and has become a popular and much-loved date in the village calendar.
Helen Stace, of Colwall Orchard group, which revived the tradition, said: "We had a great Wassail on Saturday. It was a lovely clear evening, beautifully lit by our flares, lights and bonfire.
"Old Meg morris side got the event off to a great start, and we were graced with a visit from the elusive Mistletoe Man - the winter incarnation of the green man.
"The Butler was supported by Tom Tit and the Apple Queen who had plenty of toast to feed the small birds of the orchard.
"We had a great pig roast from Hilltop Farm, who supply rare breed pigs, and supplied vegetarian pasties, flapjacks and brownies."
