MADLEY Primary School held a Race for Life for the first time for its pupils.

Joz Mayo-Evans, who works at the school, arranged the run at the Hereford Leisure Centre.

There were 120 children taking part from years one, two, three and six, who ran 4km.

Years four and five were at Hay Festival but ran the final 1km the following day at the school.

Joz said: "This is the first year. We are hoping it will be one of many."

Emma O'Hare, a fitness instructor, did the warm-up in the sunshine last Thursday.

Joz added: "I just wanted to give something back for the kids. So many kids at school have had people affected by cancer.

"We wanted to encourage children to their own bit. It will be good if lots of primary school will do it."

She said she also wanted to raise awareness of the importance of raising money for cancer research, and also to highlight how much positive work is being done by researchers.

Many companies donated to the event- Hereford Leisure Centre provided the venue, Golden Pioneer Travel and Buchanan Coaches provided the buses, Berrington Springwater provided drinks and Pizza Hut provided snacks.
