A FORMER Leominster Grammar School pupil was officially introduced to the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat peer this week.

The Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democrat party, Nick Clegg, announced in August that Chris Fox – who was the party's chief executive for three years – was one of six new Lib Dem peers.

And the 57-year-old, who lived in Nordan as a youngster but now lives in Windsor, was yesterday officially introduced to the house as"Lord Fox, of Leominster in the county of Herefordshire".

He said: “I moved to Nordan, near Leominster, when I was five and was a pupil at Leominster Grammar School, leaving in 1976. My wife's family are all still based in the area, as well as members of my own family.

“I will do my best to reflect my background and the issues which affect people in the area."

Lord Fox has been the director of group communications at Redditch-based GKN for almost three years and said he will try to reflect his background in the house.

"The important thing is that most of the peers who get appointed want to do a good job and that’s certainly what I shall try to do," he added.

"Most of my career has been in manufacturing so I have an interest in engineering and I’ll also try to work with peers of the same background and reflect that.”

The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament and works with the House of Commons to make laws, check and challenge the actions of the government, and provide a forum of independent expertise.

Speaking ahead of his introduction, Lord Fox told the Hereford Times: “There’s some nervousness as I have to go through a ceremony and make sure I don’t trip over. There will be about 20 of my friends and family there on the day – I think they are quite excited about it. It really is an honour and quite a responsibility.”
