STUDENTS are preparing to perform an outdoor Shakespeare play at a National Trust property.

Hailes Abbey, near Winchcombe is hosting a production of As You Like It by University of Gloucester students.

The former abbey, now just a tranquil and atmospheric ruin, was once one of the country’s most important religious centres during the early middle ages.

Students visited the site for a preliminary visit on Monday last week (April 24), which had extra meaning as it marked the day after Shakespeare's birthday.

It is also the burial place of members of the Plantagenet family and it later played a central role in the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The site is currently undergoing a major museum refit, due for completion at the end of June.

The play takes place from Thursday May 11 to Saturday May 13 with performances beginning at 7pm.
