DATES for the 2017 Winchcombe Tea Dances have been announced, with the first to take place later this month.

The monthly afternoon dances have become so popular since they started less than a year ago, that they have become a regular fixture in the town.

Sarah Hartley, who organises the dances with Hilary Wright, said: "Tea dances were extremely popular back in the 1940s and 1950s and in the last few years there has been a big revival of traditional dancing and interest in that era.

"You don't need a partner, just come along and join in, everyone is welcome including those who may just wish to come and listen to the music and watch the dancing."

Live music will be played by Don Adams, featuring familiar songs from the 1920s through to the 1960s.

The songs will be adapted to all types of ballroom dances, from foxtrots and quick-steps, to waltzes and jives.

And the organisers will be on hand to offer tips to the less experienced dancers.

"It is a friendly, social afternoon with some experienced dancers on hand to partner those who may be on their own," said Ms Hartley.

The first dance of 2017 takes place on Wednesday, January 25 at the Abbey Fields Community Centre in Back Lane, Winchcombe and runs from 2pm to 4pm.

The year's other dances will be held every month on Wednesdays. The dates are: February 22, March 29, April 26, May 31, June 28, July 26, August 30, September 27, October 25 and November 29.

Entry to each event is just £5, which will see dancers through an afternoon of cake and refreshments.

All proceeds from the dances go to the Winchcombe Day Care Centre, a registered charity.
