A BROADWAY museum proved so attractive to one visitor that she travelled all the way from the South Coast on public transport to see it.

And staff at the Gordon Russell Design Museum in Broadway have informally given the title of Visitor of the Year to Sue Rockall of Brighton, who made the 300- mile round trip on a recent Saturday.

She left home in Brighton at 6.30am, and using two trains, the London Underground and a local bus that runs between Moreton-in-Marsh and Broadway, she reached the museum in Russell Square, Broadway, by early afternoon.

surprised and delighted the museum’s stewards with her adventurous spirit.

Sue stayed almost to closing time to take in a personal tour of the galleries where she devoured a mine of information from museum steward Laurie Wolder.

The museum shop provided Sue with great reading material to learn more about the Gordon Russell story on her way home.

Mr Wolder said: “Sue purchased three of our books to read on the journey home and I gave her a copy of our DVD as a thank-you for her great determination.”

Her admission ticket the the museum allows free entry over 12 months, and Mr Wolder has offered to collect her from Moreton-In-Marsh if she decides to pay a return visit.

Once she had returned home, Sue sent an email to Mr Wolder and his colleagues to let them know how much she enjoyed the day.

She said: “I would like to thank you and your colleagues who were so welcoming and well informed, which helped to make my visit to your delightful Gorgon Russell Design Museum, such a rewarding and memorable experience. What a legacy of fine furniture design Gordon Russell has left us.”

The museum was set up to showcase the life and work of cabinet-maker Gordon Russell and his company. Its collection of furniture embraces a range of styles from the Arts and Crafts to 30s streamline modernism, and utility furniture to 1980s luxury post-modernism.

It also houses an extensive archive of original drawings, notebooks, catalogues and correspondence, as well as access to the firm’s original reference library.
