THOUSANDS of jazz music fans flocked to a well-known festival.

Upon Jazz Festival saw well-known figures perform throughout the weekend, including 60s supergroup The Temperance Seven, Alan Barnes, Bent Persson and Jonathan Vinten.

Also amongst the popular performers on the day were Leeds-based Louis Louis Louis and the Washboard Resonators, as well as the world-renowned Jive Aces and Swing Commanders.

Ticket sales for the four day festival from Thursday to Sunday are not yet known, although they are thought to be a slight increase on last year.

A spokesman for the festival said: "The whole festival has been a massive success.

"The crowds have really enjoyed the weekend.

"In terms of highlights, Louis Louis Louis were really popular as were the Jive Aces.

"Temperance Seven and Swing Commanders also did really well."

Fifty gigs took place between Thursday and Sunday in the venues which make up the festival village including the Best of Young Jazz programme celebrating the rising stars of the jazz world.

Performances also took place in the town's memorial hall and parish church.

During the weekend, a Mardi Gras-style parade on Saturday saw fans decorate traditional brollies before a procession through Upton.

Riverboat shuffles took place aboard the Conway Castle and dozens of stalls were selling items from jazz memorabilia to artisan food and local ales and ciders.

For the first time, a performance space by the riverside was installed for a fringe festival, which reflected the decorated windows of the towns shops, pubs and clubs.

The festival, in its 32nd year, attracted a mix of traditional jazz, Dixieland, New Orleans, hot club, European and gipsy jazz along with jive, swing and boogie woogie.
