POLICE swooped on travellers after criminal damage to a site in Droitwich.

Around eight police cars were at Addyes Way, dealing with about 20 travellers on Friday who were moved on from the site.

Wychavon district councillor for the area, Richard Morris said that criminal damage was caused to the site as the travellers tried to enter a field.

Cllr Morris said that damage had been done to a bollard and wiring on the fences so that they could enter the field.

Cllr Morris said: "The travellers have not been at the site for several years, when we had three episodes and Wychavon have invested a lot of money to stop them, but travellers have decided to come here tonight.

"The police have been fantastic, they were here in numbers.

"Permission has been given by Wychavon District Council to implement a section 61 order, to move them off the site.

"Some of them are still trying to get onto the site, but many have gone elsewhere now."

Droitwich police tweeted: "Officers are currently dealing with an unauthorised encampment on Addyes Way, Droitwich."

They added that the incident had been resolved later on, with the travellers moved away from the site.

The initial call to police was made by a resident at around 6.45pm on Friday.
