A SCHOOL building and a popular pub and music venue have been honoured in the 2017 Stourport Civic Awards.

Worleys at the Swan and Burlish Park Primary School were the big winners at the biennial award presentation on May 11.

The winners were presented with their awards by Mark Garnier.

Will Scott, representing the judging panel, said: "The Swan Hotel is a very prominent and historic building in the heart of Stourport. It had been vacant for many years and was in a very poor condition and at risk of demolition.

"The creation of a number of compatible going concerns, mostly based on music, gave us the firm impression that this ambitious project would succeed.

"The assessors considered Burlish Park to be an outstanding building of great quality.

"The brief had been developed in conjunction with the pupils from the start and as time has gone by, it was very good to see how many of their requests have now been fulfilled.

"The outside areas were inspirational, especially the Forest School."

The Wharf, in Mart Lane, received a commendation for "the sympathetic conversion and reuse of this prominent canalside building".

First introduced in 1995, the awards encourage and recognise projects which contribute to the quality of the environment of Stourport. The previous winners, two years ago, were Bramble the Working Boat and the Wyre Forest Crematorium.
