THE theft of knickers from a district councillor's washing line has been described as bizarre, coming after he warned residents to be vigilant.

Kempsey district councillor David Harrison says he has reported to police that 10 pairs of his partner, Jan Fowler's underwear were stolen from the washing line in the garden of their property in Brookend Lane, overnight between April 5 and 6.

Mr Harrison said it was a strange one, coming also at a time he had written a section in his column in the local parish magazine called vigilance.

Mr Harrison said: "I have a column in the Kempsey parish news magazine, and in April I wrote about vigilance with crime and break ins.

"Little did I know I would be reporting to the police that Jan would have her white and pink knickers stolen.

"We are saying any sightings report to Jan. We have been laughing about it, but it is a crime.

"We have a good community in Kempsey on crime matters. The PACT meetings have 20 to 30 people attend each time.

"That is unprecedented, one of the highest in the county."

Mr Harrison added he had provided an update in his next column, entitled 'nicker knickers', reporting that there had so far not been any response on the theft, which was still being investigating by police.

Anyone with information on the theft can call police on 101, quoting 30212N.
