MEMBERS of Bromsgrove District Council's Licensing Committee has decided against making all licensed taxis across the district wheelchair accessible.

Following a year's worth of consultation exercises, committee members considered the results at a meeting at Parkside last night.

Members agreed there was 'no evidence' to change the council's current policy and make all licensed taxis wheelchair accessible, but have said that taxis which are wheelchair-friendly should be promoted more prominently.

Currently the council licences 13 taxis - seven Hackney Carriages and six private hire vehicles, which are accessible to residents in wheelchairs.

Now, the committee intends to make the details of these taxis readily available to residents who need them.

Committee chairman Cllr Rita Dent said: "While the outcome was that members were not satisfied there was sufficient evidence to support amending the council’s policy, the outcome to promote the right taxis to meet our residents’ needs was really positive.

“We are now planning our promotional campaign.”
