UNEMPLOYMENT in Bromsgrove has risen slightly in the past year, but remains at the lowest level across the UK for more than a decade.

Figures released on Wednesday, January 18, show 565 people are registered as unemployed in the district – up from 35 from last year, a rise of seven per cent.

Youth unemployment also increased slightly, with the number of 18-24 year-olds registered as unemployed in the district standing at 145 – up from 20 and a rise of 16 per cent.

Bromsgrove's unemployment rate continues to reflect favourably from five years ago.

Compared to 2012, youth unemployment in the district is down 285 – a reduction of 66 per cent – while unemployment overall is down 732, indicating a reduction of 56 per cent.

Nationally, UK unemployment rates are also positive, falling by 52,000 to 1.6 million in the three months to November - the lowest rate for more than a decade.

Elsewhere, data showed 69.9 per cent of women aged from 16 to 64 were in work – the highest female employment rate since records began in 1971.

Commenting on The Office for National Statistics figures, Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid said: "Since 2010, unemployment in Bromsgrove has fallen by 60 per cent and youth unemployment down by 66 per cent.

"I’m encouraged by these figures, and as the father of three daughters, I’m especially proud that there are more women in work now, than ever before.

"As always, there’s still more to do, and I look forward to helping more people across Bromsgrove at my next Jobs Fair."

Mr Javid is hosting his third Bromsgrove Jobs Fair on Friday, March 3, which aims to help more people get back into work.
