DOUBLE yellow lines have been painted outside a Redditch school to relieve parking problems and to aid child safety.

After dozens of concerns raised by residents, parents and Greenlands and Lodge Park Safer Neighbourhood Team a Traffic Regulation Order outside Oak Hill First School was recently passed by Worcestershire County Council bosses.

Clearways were also erected south of Deer Barn Hill to provide safe access for the local bus service and a metal barrier was also replaced.

Currently, the school has a vacancy for a lollipop lady and it is hoped the restrictions will make things safer until someone is recruited.

Worcestershire County Councillor Pattie Hill alongside other local county councillors put the issue forward to the council's highways department.

Cllr Hill said: "We hope this will make it much safer for those parents who walk with their children to school, other pedestrians who have found it difficult and wheelchair users who have been unable to complete their journeys.

"This is a very busy road and the school is the biggest first school, some drivers seem to forget the need to slow down and others need to remember that driving on pavements is not allowed.

"The simple answer is to leave home in plenty of time and consider others."

A Greenlands and Lodge Park Safer Neighbourhood Team spokesman said: "After a lot of complaints from parents and residents, police in collaboration with the school and local and county councillors have finally managed to get the much needed parking restrictions outside of Oak Hill School.

"It is hoped that this will make things safer for the children going to and leaving school each day."

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, added: "Our highways team investigated the request and after fully consulting with the local member, put forward proposals to prohibit parking at the junctions close to the school, to maintain the safe free flow of traffic and protect pedestrians."
