SERVICES are being held in Redditch and Alcester to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Battle of The Somme.

Today in Redditch, a memorial event - open to anyone who wishes to attend - will take place at the war memorial in Plymouth Road at noon.

Schoolchildren and the Royal British Legion will lay wreaths to remember those who died in the First World War.

Around 50 young servicemen from the Redditch area died during the battle, which lasted 141 days, finishing on November 18 1916.

A short ceremony is also being held on Church Green in Alcester from 10am to noon on Saturday, June 2. 

There will be prayers and wreath will be laid to honour those who lost their lives.
