YOUNG musicians from Bromsgrove's five middle schools joined for a day of jazz at Aston Fields Middle School to celebrate up and coming musical talent.

On Wednesday, April 27, 10 pupils from each school enjoyed a day of workshops led by professional jazz musician Chris Mapp and drummer Jonathan Silk as part of Upton-upon-Severn Jazz Festival's Best of Young Jazz project.

Throughout the morning, budding musicians learnt swing melody and note-blending before an afternoon performance to younger pupils to showcase what they had learnt.

Marie Oldaker from Best of Young Jazz said: "All the teachers joined in and it was lovely to see the teachers and pupils playing music together. Some had a lot of experience and some had none at all but what was lovely about it is that it didn't matter because it was all improvised.

"It was very visual and all about listening and hearing the music so you didn't have to be able to read it. You couldn't see who was experienced and who wasn't - it was great."

The Day of Jazz is part of county-wide jazz education initiative, funded by The David Morgan Trust, Worcestershire Youth Music, Arts Council England and The Bransford Trust.

The initiative is set to be rolled out to Bromsgrove's high schools this summer.
