A SWIMMING event designed to give beginners a taste of competition was held in Pershore.

The first Old Fogies swimming gala took place on Saturday, April 18, at Pershore Leisure Centre and 15 swimmers aged 20 to over 60 took part.

The event was organised to offer adults the opportunity to race against swimmers of their own ability and have their times recorded.

It is hoped the gala can be repeated three to four times a year, giving participants the chance to beat their personal bests.

Chris Gooderham, who organised the event, said “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

"It was funny watching the warm-up with most swimmers more interested in trying to dive off the blocks rather than actually doing any warming up.

"This was not surprising given most haven’t dived off blocks for 20 years.

“Most sports you do as an adult give you the opportunity to compete, such as running, tennis, football, golf – whatever your sport there is a local event or local league you can join.

"But swimming doesn’t really have that.

"Most people would be too afraid of masters swimming because it seems pretty serious.

"The Old Fogies gala however isn’t. Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome to come along, be cheered on and get their times recorded.”

A further event will take place on Saturday, September 12, at Pershore Leisure Centre.
