THE lucky licensees of one Herefordshire pub will be able to put away their rent book for a whole year after impressing the judges of a national competition.

Nigel and Tee Maud, of the New Inn, St Owen’s Cross, were winners in this year’s CaskForce beer quality initiative, run by Marstons, at the Great British Pub awards in London.

The couple also won an award for this year’s best quality family pub in the Midlands.

Nigel said: “We can hardly take in what this will mean for our business. It’s worth £34,000 to us – that’s certainly going to take the pressure off and we’ve vowed we’ll allow ourselves a day off a week.

“I feel that this is recognition for all the hard work we’ve put into this pub with the help of our staff team. It’s just fantastic news.

“We are recognised as a CAMRA pub in the good beer guide and we maintained the quality of the beer since we got here in 2006.”

The couple heard about their win at the ceremony at The Hilton Hotel in Park Lane.
