Equine star, Mon Mome, is captured on canvas

A RACEHORSE which brought Grand National glory back to Herefordshire after a 50-year break has been immortalised by a local portrait artist.

Louise J Scott’s pastel picture of 2009 winner Mon Mome will go on display in Leominster this weekend after the 45-year-old spotted him at the Herefordshire Country Fair following his win.

“I wanted to break into the world of horses and I decided that Herefordshire has this famous horse, and that was a good place to start,” Louise said.

“I sent a free copy to the lady that does the training and asked them if they would like to come and view it – I just thought they would like to see it.”

A global audience of 500 million watched the 100-1 outsider unexpectedly romp to victory last year and champagne corks started popping at Aramstone Stables in King’s Caple soon after.

Local trainer Venetia Williams in turn became only the second woman ever to train a Grand National winner and said at the time Mon Mome would be “special for the rest of his life”.

Now the star has been captured in 50 limited edition prints that are up for sale following an exhibition of the picture at Leominster Tourist Information Centre on bank holiday Monday. For details, visit artistlouise.com.
