1:02pm Friday 26th February 2010

A cat died after fire spread through a house in Leominster last night.

Homes were also evacuated following the blaze in the terraced home at Hampton Gardens at 7.30pm.

Five crews tackled the blaze using hose-reels and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control.

The residents’ dog was found alive, however one cat was found dead and another is missing.

The Fire Service Red Cross support vehicle was brought in and used to support residents affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Kevin Williams, from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The prompt arrival of both local retained fire crews, and the work they did in the initial phase of this incident clearly helped to prevent the fire from establishing itself in neighbouring properties and causing greater loss.

"Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is currently seeking to recruit additional men and women as on-call firefighters at a number of rural fire stations to ensure we have adequate cover to respond to this type of incident 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"Further details about the important role of on-call fire fighter is available on the Fire Service website www.hwfire.org.uk ."
