Election rival weighs into Wiggin Cadbury row

UNDER-fire Leominster MP Bill Wiggin has been branded “unbelievably thoughtless and uncaring” by an election rival.

Lib Dem candidate Lucy Hurds weighed into the row caused by Mr Wiggin’s apparent labelling of Cadbury staff as “whinging”.

She said the chocolate giant’s planned takeover by Kraft was a worrying time for employees at the county’s Marlbrook plant near Leominster.

“The insensitive way in which Mr Wiggin has handled the issue has only made a difficult time more stressful for all concerned.

“To refer to the staff as a ‘whinging workforce’ was unbelievably thoughtless and uncaring.”

For the full story on the fallout of the Conservative MPs comments, see this week's Hereford Times.

When one considers that Mr Wiggin is a millionaire who made his pile in the banking sector (yes, the BANKING sector) this attack on folks who graft honestly for a living is all the more astonishing. Decent Conservatives in Nth Herefordshire must now finally realise that this MP is not fit for purpose. I hope deselect him ASAP.

Jim, you do realise that those who want to deselect him would probably just be shut out of the meeting like last time? (fire hazard/not enough chairs/delete as apt). Why doesn't Wiggin just hand the constituency to the Lib Dems on a plate?

dc, I understand very well what you are saying.
Also, there is a General Election coming up & one understands the pull of party loyalty & not wishing to let the Conservative party down.
But Mr Wiggin has so seriously let the Nth Herefordshire Conservative party down in the last year - over & over again - that it would be astonishing if there were not a grass roots revolt against this greasy pole politician.
I fully accept by living in Leo that I live in natural Conservative territory; that doesn't mean I can't be represented by a DECENT Conservative.

my oh my..I never thought I would hear myself say this..
I live in Leominster too and would never ever have considered voting conservative, although I have not seen the comments, it demonstrates one thing, Bill Wiggin is speaking honestly about how he feels, unlike the majority of politicians and wannabe politicians who only ever say what they think you want to hear.
perhaps he is unfit to be a member of parliament for this very reason and Jim Miller, its about time you put away the dagger and demonstrated to myself and the rest of leominster how you could do a better job and save me from the disgrace and shame I would heap upon myself by voting Blue

the point so dearly missed by the politicians spending too much time trying to snipe at others with childish name calling is that RBS funded the kraft deal, the british taxpayers own RBS, so in effect we have paid americans to take away jobs from england.

its madness, completely wrong and shows the government is unfit for purpose for letting this go ahead.

you cant stop a company owner/owners selling their business but you dont have to fund it especially when it mean less people employed and paying taxes to UK PLC

On top of what digitaldave and Jim Miller have said, I'd add that a few hundred more votes have been deliverd to the BNP by the MP's comment.
What is sad is that Cadbury Marlbrook was actually set up in the 50s with grants and guidance from the then Conservative govt who recognised that employment in a rural area needed to be nurtured.
That was a different Conservatism, it seems, to what we are being offered today. I would like to be able to vote for that sort of Conservatism, not Mr Wiggin's
