Leominster woman died after surgery

A LEOMINSTER woman died days after surgery to remove a tumour.

Nesta Barrington was admitted to Hereford County Hospital in February for an operation to remove the cancerous growth in her bowel.

An inquest in Hereford heard how the surgery went well with the 79-year-old, of Beech Terrace, showing signs of recovery for at least five days after.

But pathologist Dr Terence Jones told the inquest that information he had been given suggested Mrs Barrington’s condition deteriorated almost a week after the operation.

Dr Jones said complications with this sort of surgery were not unusual, while consultant surgeon Brendan McIlroy said there was about a five per cent risk of death from the operation, taking into account her age and health.

Mrs Barrington’s daughter, Christine Neave, told the inquest she was unhappy with the aftercare her mother received, adding she would have liked to have seen her more after she fell ill.

Assistant deputy coroner Roland Wooderson said there was no choice but to operate on the cancerous growth.

He recorded a verdict of death by natural causes
