POLICE have praised a Ledbury pensioner who slammed the door on a bogus caller.

A New Street resident was visited by a man claiming to work for Welsh Water last Tuesday.

The resident, in his 70s, refused entry after the caller failed to provide identification and claimed to have come from next door.

The pensioner knew the neighbours were away and reported the incident to police, who confirmed the caller was bogus.

Det Insp Jonathan Roberts praised the man’s actions and urged others to follow his example.

“He did everything we recommend in our Knock Knock campaign against bogus callers and stopped the man from entering his home to steal,” he said.

Police described the caller as white, aged about 35, 5ft 6ins, of medium build with short, dark hair, a long nose and narrow face.

He was clean shaven, wearing black trousers, a black jacket and plain baseball cap and was not carrying any tools or paperwork.

Anyone with information can call PC Belinda Masters of Ledbury Police on 08457 444888.
