Big crowds expected at Ledbury carnival
11:10am Friday 24th August 2012 in Ledbury
THE Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations are to feature heavily on floats for this year’s Ledbury Carnival on Monday.
The town’s 38th carnival, since the popular event was revived in 1975, will have the theme Great Britain in 2012, leaving Ledbury people almost spoilt for choice.
Carnival committee chairman Steve Clegg said: “We are expecting a good turn-out, the same as last year, with around a dozen big floats.
“Everyone is fired up with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.”
The event is expected to attract upwards of 10,000 people to the town centre.
Local firms and organisations are pulling out the stops to help.
Mr Clegg singled out the procession as a likely highlight, with floats leaving the rugby club at noon, for a grand progress up New Street and through the town centre.
Other highlights will include performances by the Irish band, Roving Crows, the Ledbury Dance Company and singer Jenny Hallam.
Carnival committee member Hilary Jones announced the launch of the Carnival Shop Window Competition this week, and also the carnival raffle, with a top prize of £150.
She said: “Raffle tickets are being sold every Saturday morning leading up to carnival day in the vicinity of the Market House, and on carnival day itself tickets will be available from the
carnival information stand opposite the main stage.
Judging will take place today from 2pm.
Individuals or businesses should contact Mrs Jones on 07779 432289.
The grand raffle draw will take place on carnival day, on the main stage at 5pm.
