WORKERS at a garage helped prevent a major fire when smoke surrounded a visiting tanker.

The lorry was driving into the forecourt at Bishops of Bromyard on the town’s bypass when there was a problem with its tyres.

Forecourt manager Mike Pursall said: “The driver jumped out and we ran to tackle the fire with extinguishers.

But we couldn’t put it out properly, so we called the fire brigade and they came to take charge.

“They wouldn’t let us remove the truck and they left it for a while to cool down.

“The mechanics then came and took the wheels off and decided that the trailer part would go back to its Warwickshire depot and the driver then drove the unit back.”

“Safety was the principle aim and I was impressed with what everyone did.

“Representatives from GB Oils even came down to sort out the problem.”

The incident happened at noon on Sunday.
