The weekend's weather turned out more wet than white, but with some snowfall overnight resulting in wet and slushy roads today (Monday, February 11), drivers in Worcestershire are once again being urged to take care on the roads.

A few light sleet or snow showers are expected this afternoon and into the evening until around 9pm.  Skies will be clear at times overnight, with road surface temperatures dropping below freezing, before a drier, mostly cloudy morning on Tuesday.  The freezing temperatures overnight will result in a patchy hoar frost and icy stretches on damp or wet roads.

Worcestershire County Council's fleet of gritters will be going out again later today to support residents and businesses in keeping the county moving.  Secondary routes will be gritted from 6.30pm, followed by primary routes.  Inspectors will then be on standby to monitor conditions with the Met Office.

Drivers are once again urged to drive with caution, ensuring they temper their driving according to the conditions, and ensure they maintain a safe distance between themselves and other vehicles to allow for additional braking distance when roads are wet or icy.

Worcestershire County Council's Highways Manager, Jon Fraser, said: "Fortunately Worcestershire escaped the heavy snowfall that was predicted for the weekend.  However due to yesterday's rain and a dusting of snow overnight roads are wet and slushy, so conditions are still slippery and even after they've been treated with grit it's always worth remembering to drive with caution and temper your speed according to the conditions."

Gritting teams are also out and about ensuring grit bins across the county are refilled as fast as they can.  To help residents pinpoint their nearest grit bin an interactive map is available at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting, which allows users to search by postcode.

The dedicated section of the website also includes a map showing the designated routes, which are served by the 31 gritting vehicles, answers to FAQs, road safety advice and local radio station frequencies.

National round-up

Parts of the country woke up to more than four inches of snow this morning.

Most areas from Scotland down through to south-east England have been hit with a covering of at least two inches of snow.

And the worst affected areas, including north England and the Midlands, could have twice that.

More than four inches has already settled in High Wycombe according to reports, weather experts said.

THE snow finally arrived in Worcestershire overnight but only three schools have closed in the area and flooding may become a problem.

The snow led to the closure of the Kingfisher School in Redditch, Lickey Hills Primary School in Old Birmingham Road, Lickey, and St Luke's CE First School in Redditch.

Worcestershire County Council were on standby all over the weekend with gritters. Drivers have also been urged to take their own precautions, including putting anti-freeze in the cooling system, checking the tread and air pressure in tyres and listening to the radio.

The Met office said it would be cloudy and cold today but mostly dry into the evening with light winds with some sleet and snow may return after midnight from the west. The minimum temperature is -1C. Tomorrow is expected to start and cloudy and dull but should become dry by midday.

Flooding has also proved a problem with New Street in Upton closed due to flooding. There are flood warnings in place on the river Avon at Wyre Piddle and at Strensham and Bredon and flood alerts on the river Severn at Worcestershire and the river Salwarpe. In total there are eight flood warnings and 31 flood alerts in place across the region.
