FEARS that Presteigne will be left without a 24-hour cash machine have been put to rest.

HSBC, which is closing its Presteinge branch in March, has revealed it will not remove its current cash machine until planning permission to install a replacement machine elsewhere has been secured.

Welcoming the news Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams, who fought alongside MP Roger Williams and traders to keep the branch open, said removing the ATM would have been "madness".

When HSBC shuts on March 9, Lloyds TSB will be the only bank left in the rural Powys town of Presteigne. HSBC blamed the closure on falling customer numbers.
