Kington harpist Glenda Allaway accepted into Chetham

A TALENTED teen harpist has won a place at the largest specialist music school in the UK.

Kington’s Glenda Allaway, who also plays piano and violin, will receive instrumental tuition at the highest level when she starts A-level studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester next month.

The former Lady Hawkins’ School pupil, who is 16, will take maths, further maths, physics and advanced academic music at the school, which produced the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2008.

Her harp teacher Audrey Douglas said: “I am very proud of Glenda’s achievements and delighted that she will now have more time to dedicate to her music. I am sure she will gain so much from being among like-minded young talented musicians.”

Glenda will also get to play in chamber groups, choirs and high-profile concerts during a placement funded by the government’s Music and Dance scheme.

She is now planning a 10-mile sponsored bike ride for the August bank holiday after all students were challenged to cycle 50,000 miles collectively to help fund a new £1 million school building.

DOG owners are being reminded to keep their pets under control after 12 posties were attacked in as many months in Hereford.

Royal Mail said the city had seen a higher than average number of instances and urged householders to think about the repercussions of leaving dogs alone, especially during the holidays.

Collection and delivery manager Kath Hatton said: “Just being threatened by an unrestrained pet can be frightening for postmen and women who don’t know the animal and we are appealing to all owners to be extra careful in order to help our people on their rounds, particularly if their pet has a territorial nature.”

Anyone whose pet is involved in an attack or a near miss can expect a letter from Royal Mail or, in more serious cases, contact from the dog warden or even the police.

The company is now asking householders to keep their dogs indoors when the post arrives, close off access from the rear garden and also to consider fitting a letter cage inside the front door or a standalone mailbox outside.
