Facelift at Hereford car park prompts lift closure

A LIFT and staircase at one of Hereford’s busiest car parks is set to be closed for almost two months.

Herefordshire Council says refurbishment work at the Garrick multi-storey means the lift and staircase closest to the entrance on Widemarsh Street will be shut from September 17.

The authority says the work is being carried out now to ensure it is finished before the start of Christmas shopping.

“We recognise that this will be disruptive and will cause inconvenience to car park users,” said Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for education and infrastructure.

“The council apologises for the inconvenience, but the work does need to be done and we have tried to minimise the impact of the lift and staircase closures.

“I think people will be pleased with the new lifts and the improvements to the staircases once the work has finished.”

Work is expected to be completed by November 9.

Is this going to be another Garrick house scenario where they spend ridiculous amounts of money refurbishing the place just to knock it down to make way for the ESG?

Only in Hereford can our local authority think a 'lift' and 'staircase' is going to halt our decline. I couldn't care less about the lift. It may become the finest lift in the Country but it aint going to provide one single job for our young people.
All the previous postings are spot on. This is a complete waste of time. The only advantage it may bring is to allow me the opportunity to get to the top of the building comfortably and quickly before I drag on my last fag, swallow the dregs from my bottle of rum and jump into the abyss to meet Jesus.
We are doomed. No hope.No ideas.

Herefordshire Council have to much money they have to spend it as fast as they can, it must be on pointless things the lift and staircase
Would have been the fisrt thing hereford council would have thought of they woundn't think about improving the roads or the looks of holeford we need more abandoned buldings more holes in the roads more taking about inner ring roads but there's one thing we can't put up with and that's lifts and staircases that don't look right.someone at the councils going to get a big pat on the back for there effort..

You can't jump off the top to end your life anymore as after the last jumper they installed £27,000 of fencing.
I agree with replacing the lifts as 60% of the time I have had to use them while taking someone with walking difficulties to go shopping they have not been working.

Anyone spotted the very expensive ques likely sign that's on the wrong side of the Ross Road going out of the City.. LOL
That's one big **** up if you ask me.
Even if it was on the right side of the road it's not going to light up when its sensor is triggered as the traffic has to be going at least 25mph to do so.

The Health Authority paid for the fencing, not the Council. Garrick House and the multi-storey car park were gerry built as a design and build contract in the 80's - the Council of the time didn't have a clue what they were buying (as they hadn't designed it and they were too incompetent to employ people who could) and couldn't do much about it when they realised it was, frankly, rubbish. Cue endless patching and mending, including a forthcoming £1m+ bill to stop the car park collapsing. If the Council were a business, they'd be bankrupt in a flash and the directors barred for incompetence. As it is, we all just shrug our shoulders and hand over the money.

William tells me that I can no longer successfully jump into the void because of the Council meddling into my civil rights, namely the opportunity, if I so choose, to jump from any high public building and into the unknown. This City would be a whole lot better if people had the opportunity to be a jumper. I'm not suggesting for one moment that it should become compulsory but at least give a man or a woman (Equality if a given right) the opportunity, if they so wish, to jump from Garrick Car Park.
I'm not letting this one go. I'm going all the way to get back 'our right' to jump, if we so wish, from the aforementioned public building.

When I was about 19, me and some mates made a massive snow-man on the top of the multi-storey. I'm 40 now... I wonder if he is still there?
He may have jumped too.

Thank you William. Thank you Clarkester. This aint just about me. Not anymore. Its much much more than that. This is a fight I intend to persue on behalf of those who have no voice. The dumb for starters, the criminally insane and folk like me who simply want the option of being able to jump if I or they so wish.
Lads... I will not give in and to make my point, I may, but I may change my mind, scale the Town Hall and take up my right to jump down into St.Owens Street next Pancake Day.

Didn't HC retain the multi-storey during the OLM sale with Stanhope because it needed £1M worth of work doing on it? Seems Stanhope knew a lemon when they saw one...wonder how long it will take to earn back the money spent on it? Hopefully they'll be a full time lift operator in there, marble staircases and ivory banisters. Only then we will be the envy of the world.
