Housing association evicts "nightmare" tenant

A “Nightmare neighbour” has been evicted from a Hereford flat after neighbours complained of dog mess, urine, vomit and sexual activity in a shared stairwell.

Marches Housing Association has obtained possession of the flat from a court judge and legally evicted a tenant after a year of problems.

The housing association says it sought legal action after the tenant’s neighbours were subjected to loud parities, disturbances and intimidating groups of people congregating at the property.

Now, a month after a judge granted Marches possession of the flat and the problem tenant was ordered to leave, Marches housing officer Caroline Light has thanked residents for their help.

She said: “They were fearful of reprisals for providing evidence but without it we wouldn’t have been able to win the case and we are sorry it took so long to obtain this outcome.”

What amazes me is that it takes so long to evict problem tenants. One of my close family members was subjected to intimidation and anti-social behaviour by a nuisance neighbour but it took Herefordshire Housing nearly 3 years to evict them. The problems started very soon after the individual moved in and despite multiple arrests and breaches of ASBO's HH wouldn't move quickly. They explained that even the nuisance neighbour has rights and there were rules they had to follow but they failed their duty of care to my relative (who is 85) and made her fearful of being in her own home. I think housing associations should have more power and should act more quickly in dealing with nuisance tenants.

I had the same problems with a neighbour, doing the same things in the stairwell, and really loud parties. the council did nothing, the police did nothing. constant passing of the buck. We ended up having to move because of these people and the authorities inability to deal with them. its good to see that these problem tenants have been evicted and their poor neighbours can have some peace.
