MOVE over London and Bristol, for Hereford is fast becoming the UK’s capital of street culture.

Eyes were raised last month when a stencil of Alice in Wonderland appeared on the former Sportsman Inn on Widemarsh Common.

But a fellow group of artists has since taken a softer approach by leaving “guerilla knitting” on bollards outside the city’s art college.

The hats, pom-poms and netting appeared last week and came with a calling card from the “twisted knitters”. The anonymous group is a movement of seven “graffiti knitters” which aims to make Herefordshire brighter, one step at a time.

Members have recently left knitted mice above the door of the Mousetrap in Church Street and have dressed Elgar’s statue.

They have also left knitted wraps around the Old House railings and the sculpture outside All Saints’ Church on Eign Gate.

Another Banksy-inspired artwork also appeared alongside the wall of Maplins in Perseverance Road sometime last week.

The satirical piece, which featured a banker or besuited man writing Busted, has since been washed off the wall.
