A HEREFORD charity has come out on top in a photography competition.
Volunteer Laurence Squire was working for Camps for Children of Chernobyl (C4CC) in Ukraine when he caught the winning picture.
The Hinton charity was launched in 2001 to provide holidays and respite to children in the power station’s fallout zone.
More than 40 charity photos were submitted for the competition held by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.
Dave Chatfield, CC4C director, said the £150 winnings would go on medical supplies and further treatment for victims.
Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the Ukrainian atmic power station disaster, which spread radiation to several countries.
Mr Chatfield said: “Things are quite tight at the moment but our work is ongoing and this money is very welcome.”
Stuart Etherington and Guardian photographer, Eamonn McCabe, were among the judges last week in London.
Mr Etherington said: “This image shows the staying power of voluntary organisations to help people, even if their cause is no longer in the limelight.”
