4:10pm Monday 23rd January 2012 in Hay-on-Wye By Lauren Rogers
THE fight against a new supermarket in Hay-on-Wye will continue with a public meeting tonight.
The meeting, taking place at Hay Primary School in Oxford Road from 6.30pm, has been organised by the Plan B for Hay campaign group.
As well as debating Powys County Council’s proposal to sell the school site to developers, residents will hear the results of Hay and District Chamber of Commerce’s recent survey which revealed nine out of ten traders in the book town are concerned about the looming prospect of a town centre supermarket.
Powys council revealed its intention to sell the site of Hay Primary School to Llandrindod Wells-based Gaufron Development in August last year.
In return for the site, the developer would build a new 250-pupil school, care home and community centre close to the existing doctor’s surgery in Forest Road.
The council, currently looking at a secondary schools reorganisation, welcomed the move as a way of giving Hay a brand-new purpose-build school at no cost to the taxpayer, but concern about the arrival of a supermarket surfaced within days.
