CLIFFORD Primary School pupil Patrick Morgan came top in a poetry competition arranged by Fairtrade Hay.
The year one student’s verse about bananas won him the top spot, a book of poetry and a book voucher.
Julia Roberts, who helps run the scheme in local schools to mark Fairtrade Fortnight every year, said: “Our judge chose it because it is well written, has a clear Fair Trade statement and also has a sense of fun – it made her and all of us smile.”
Mel Prince from Hay’s Poetry Bookshop decided on the winner and also donated the book prize.
Patrick’s winning poem:
The Farmer’s bananas are as yellow as the sun
And I really like them as much as my mum
The people come and say yum yum
And buy the bananas as yellow as the sun
They pay a fair price so the farmer can buy rice
And build his house so it looks very nice
I sit at home eating my banana thinking
Of the farmer who farmed this banana
