Exclusive: Is Hereford getting a second railway station at Rotherwas?

HEREFORD could get a second city railway station to cope with the thousands of new jobs expected to come to Rotherwas industrial estate.

The planned Enterprise Zone, given the thumbs-up by Prime Minster David Cameron during a visit earlier this year, has prompted rail supporters to push for the new passenger service.

Would only be worthwhile if a considerable amount of people outside of Hereford got jobs in the Enterprise Zone. Most people in Hereford would have to travel almost as far to Hereford station as they would if they went straight to Rotherwas so it wouldn't be worth their while waiting for specific trains and having to allow for them being late etc.

Excellent news if it happens. Hopefully it will alleviate some of the congestion on the roads especially if they put a freight terminal in there.

Lukio - very naive if you think you can just start transporting loads via the railways just like that. It's very unlikely there'd be the capacity to suddenly put on a load of additional freight trains on this route.

hfdbob - The Enterprise Zone has been well publicised. It couldn't be further from polytunnels, as you'll find out if you google it.

@ArmadilloSackRace - Have you actually read the story in the HT? Alleviating traffic on the roads IS a part of this as confirmed by Network Rail who comment that the infrastructure is already in place to do this.

I understand that the creation of these enterprise zones announced in the 2011 Budget have a lifespan limit of 5 years. If this is the case hadn't the Council better pull out its finger and get something positive on the ground or it will be added to the ongoing projects of ESG, ring road etc and future costs falling on the local rate payer.

Rather like the 'Greenway' to Rotherwas and Holme Lacy - the grant awarded by Sustrans in 2008 has a 5 year life, expiring in March of next year. Lots and lots of talk and fees to Amey but no sign of any building work starting yet ...

Do not be troubled by this issue. The railway station will not be built and the jobs will never become a reality for our young local kids.The only thing you can be sure of is numerous discussion groups will emerge, they'll hold countless pointless meetings, huge consultancy fee's will be dished out and then nothing will happen.It never does. We are doomed to a future of more and more car wash enterprises and becoming the greatest fruit picking zone within Europe. I say, lets ditch the big ideas and stick with what we know. Grow fruit and process chicken. Sleep well.

No, I have to admit that I haven't. I've not bought the Hereford Times for about 10 years. There's only so much mind-numbingly mundane news I can take, and most of it's available here for free. At least any 'news' on this website is generally recent, whereas the printed copy is out of date before it even hits the shops.

Well bobby47 this was announced about an hr ago....

International manufacturing firms have today confirmed partnerships in an exclusive agreement to locate new advanced campuses in two UK sites.

Get It Group are a US firm who provide building development alternatives for economic growth. They have paired up with Georgia based Tbilisi Aircraft Manufacturing and Ukrainian Market-Mats to position new bases in Hereford Enterprise Zone and at organic farm, Model Farm in Ross-on-Wye.

These ventures are predicted to create upward of 500 jobs in manufacturing and to increase local spending power by £20 million a year upon the projects’ completion.

Manufacturing campuses in both regions will host their own apprenticeship training schools, with at least 10% of employees joining through these schemes.

Hereford’s Local Enterprise Partnership, Marches LEP, hopes to prompt good conditions for economic growth by encouraging the creation of sustainable jobs in the private sector.

The investment in these projects was announced today by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg at the British Business Embassy held at Lancaster House during the Olympic Games

Yes we COULD have a new train station, just as we COULD have a ring road, and apparently we COULD be getting 1000 new jobs, we COULD also have a new shopping centre, and we COULD have a company willing to buy the racecourse...and we COULD all join together and get us a council with a backbone.

The original proposals put forward by The BSC Consulting Group also included a new heritage steam museum at Rotherwas Chapel and restoration of a short section of the Ross to Hereford railway line to Hoarwithy to create much needed tourist jobs in the Hereford area.
