THE man who was seriously injured in a crash at Lyde yesterday was trapped in his car for several hours after it hit a tree.

An Ambulance, an incident support officer, a rapid response vehicle, a BASICS emergency doctor and the Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Strensham were called to the A49 Church Road at around 9.15am.

John Hawker, spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said that a car was wrapped around the trunk of a tree.

"It is believed the driver of the car, a man believed to be 18-years-old, had been trapped in the vehicle for several hours before a passer-by spotted the car from the road," he said.

"The significant damage and precarious position of the car meant that the fire service had to make the car safe to enable ambulance crews to climb up to the car to assess and treat the man.

"The man sustained a suspected fractured pelvis, significant multiple injuries to both legs, a chest injury and cuts to both arms.

"Due to his condition the doctor anaesthetised him on scene.

"Crews and the doctor worked as a team to stabilise the man's condition whilst the fire service used cutting equipment to exticate him from the wreckage of the car.

"After around three hours, the man was released from the car and immobilsed with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic and leg splints before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for emergency treatment.

"Whilst the incident was a difficult one to deal with, the ambulance service, doctor, air crews and the fire service worked excellently together to ensure the man was given the best treatment and was airlifted to hospital as soon as possible."
