THE contribution pupils make to their Leominster school and the wider community has been rated “outstanding”
followed a recent inspection.
The 300-plus youngsters at Leominster Junior School were praised by Ofsted for visiting elderly residents in the town and putting on productions and concerts.
Pupils’ in-school contribution was also given the thumbs up by lead inspector Michael Farrell following his summer term visit, with responsibilities such as office duties and library work keenly taken on.
Headteacher Rhodri Richards said he was very pleased the school’s hard work had been recognised.
The school, currently in amalgamation talks with the nearby infant building, was given an overall “good” grade with pupils’ spiritual and moral development highly rated.
Teachers were said to have a warm relationship with pupils with good management of their behaviour and interesting lessons taught throughout.
Mr Farrell did raise concerns over attendance which remain “stubbornly below average” with a small group of youngsters regularly missing school.
After sitting through a number of lessons he concluded that teaching is good, although he suggested teaching assistants could be used more effectively.
A wide range of visits and visitors keeps the curriculum fresh and the good opportunities for sport, music and art have led to high performance levels in these areas.
“We are very pleased that the hard work of pupils and staff has been recognised by inspectors and we are over the moon with the outstanding judgements,” said Mr Richards.
“Parents are rightly proud of the achievements of the children and the school.”
