Caring border town, Hay-on-Wye, wins United Nations accolades

HAY-ON-WYE has been recognised by the United Nations for its work in building friendships between Wales and Africa.

Volunteers who have been working to improve healthcare, trading conditions and education in its twin town Timbuktu collected two Gold Star community awards from Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones.

Hay GP Dr Julie Grigg, who recently visited Timbuktu to see the progress of an antenatal project she helped launch, was among those at the Senedd in Cardiff.

She said: “This award is a huge inspiration for people in both Hay and Timbuktu, as recognition of everyone’s efforts, what we’ve been able to learn from Africa, and also the difference we’ve been able to make. Our links belong to the whole community, so I hope we’ll be able to display the award proudly in Hay.”
