SEVERAL hundred people turned out to meet staff at the extended £300,000 Fownhope Medical Centre.
It was officially opened by Mary Ramage, whose late husband, Dr Patrick Ramage, provided a medical service in the area for many years.
She recalled how when they first went to Fownhope, the surgery was situated in two rooms in the family home and prescriptions were often delivered to rural areas by the butcher on his rounds.
Largely through Dr Ramage’s efforts, a medical centre was built in the heart of the village and the surgery now has its own van to deliver medicines to patients.
The latest stage of the service is a £300,000 extension to the centre, which now has 22 staff and 5,000 patients.
Many people accepted the invitation to have a look around the centre and practice manager Liz Moore described it as a very happy occasion, with many visitors saying how they appreciated having such a facility.
