POLICE are urging people to call Herefordshire Council if they find a stray dog.
After a change in the law, police no longer have the responsibility to seize stray dogs or accept them if they are taken to a police station.
Although front counter staff at Hereford would previously accept an animal if it was brought in, building work at the site means they can no longer do this.
Lynne Ponti, customer services manager at Hereford police station, said: “The ongoing building works at Hereford police station have now turned the back yard into something resembling no man’s land.
“Access to the kennel is via this back yard. Coupled with the noise of the building works, the kennel is really no longer fit for purpose.”
People are being asked to contact the dog wardens on 01432 261761 during office hours. Out of hours, the wardens can be contacted on 01432 260000 and the animal will be collected between 5.30pm and 10pm, or during the next working day.
