Whitchurch CE Primary School is awarded its second Green Flag
12:00pm Thursday 29th September 2011 in Whitchurch
IN the last week of the summer term the children and staff of Whitchurch School were thrilled to learn that they had been awarded a second Green Flag.
During the two year assessment period, Whitchurch ECO team with the help of parents, governors and staff, has developed a dedicated forest school in an acre of woodland nearby.
The school has also built and planted a large vegetable garden in the newly extended school grounds.
The garden was formally opened by Eric Lane, school grounds manager for Hereford Council.
He commented that the children must have very green fingers, judging by the wide variety and quantity of fruit and vegetables they had grown in the raised beds and greenhouse.
Children from year three went on to sell the produce to the local community and parents at the school gates. All proceeds were used to purchase a chicken coop for the chickens that the children had seen hatching out earlier in the term.
The children are now getting ready to make their first omelette.
