WAR MEMORIAL - John Caiger at Stoke Lacy has pointed out that, every year on Remembrance Sunday, the names of those men from the village who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars, and whose names appear on the war memorial, are read out. However, it has been realised that very little is known about many of these men, and attempts are now being made to redress the balance and to find out more. It is appreciated that close relatives and friends will be getting on in years so anything that they can contribute will be vital. It is proposed that a record of the fallen, plus all available information about them, should be kept in Stoke Lacy Church in order to make future remembrance services even more meaningful. Information is currently being sought in respect of Edwin Bishop, William Boucher, Robert James, William Racster, Alban Walker, and William Newman from 1914-1918 and Vincent Wyer from 1939-1945. There are also war graves in the churchyard of men not listed on the memorial. Private Charles John Aylett of the Devonshire Regiment, aged 19, died on December 29, 1917, and Private F J Burfoot of the RASC died on December 16, 1944.
