CONSULTATION - There is a major consultation event looking at shaping the future of the village tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday in Shobdon Village Hall. The drop-in event, organised by the parish plan group, runs 4pm to 9pm tomorrow and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. This is a golden opportunity for everyone to raise issues they feel are important, as well as to understand the big issues the village faces in the next few years, and see how things have developed since the last plan. You can have your say, as well as browse the information on display, and there will be members of the group on hand to answer your questions. Tea and coffee will be available. SHOBDON SCHOOL - There is a Christmas craft fair on Saturday from 2pm-5pm with quality gifts from local craft makers and businesses. There will be fun and games for the all the family including face painting.

AIR RACES - Herefordshire Aero Club at Shobdon Airfield near Leominster is host to the Royal Aero Club for a weekend of fantastic Air Racing. On August 18, the pilots compete in the Steward’s Cup and race to qualify for a place to fight it out to win the King’s Cup Air Race on August 19. The King’s Cup is the only air race that received direct support from the royal family, by King George V, starting back in 1922. The King was keen to develop light aircraft and their engines, and the chance to win an air race was a real incentive to the pioneer pilots of the day. The races will feature about 15 aircraft, all of different types and all with highly varying power and speeds, competing in four laps of a specially designed air-racing track in the skies above the Herefordshire countryside.

RELAY - A group of youngsters got into this year’s sporting spirit by running a relay and helping to raise more than £400 for their village nursery. The children from Shobdon Arches Preschool were sponsored to run a relay race carrying individual laminated letters to spell out the name of their nursery.

VILLAGE HALL - The parish council with a grant from Herefordshire Council Community Technology Grant scheme purchased a laptop, projector and screen for use by village hall hirers. Access to equipment is by application to booking clerk 01568 708446.

FOOD AND FLOWER FESTIVAL - Shobdon Food and Flower Festival runs from June 22- 24. The aroma of sweet summer fruits, fine wines from the Wye Valley and crisp local ciders will fill the air. Other attractions across the weekend include a large collection of vintage vehicles and children’s entertainment.

SPLASHING SUCCESS - Until recently, toads and newts were frequently found making their home in the dark corners of the PE shed at Shobdon Primary School. That has all changed now with the opening of a fantastic new wildlife pond area, created with the help of funding from the Kingspan Community Trust. The scheme, which the pupils decided to call Kingspond, included the planting of a variety of flora and fauna, native to Herefordshire, along with the construction of a wooden deck which overhangs the pond and allows pupils to study the amphibious life. The pond also features a wooden shelter with a living grass roof, providing an ideal shaded location for outdoor classes.

RACE NIGHT - Shobdon Cricket Club are holding their annual ever popular Race Night in the Village Hall on Saturday March 31. Doors open at 7pm. with first race at 8pm. Entrance free, light refreshments included. Licensed Bar applied for. A really enjoyable evening.

DONATION FOR KENYA - Terry Teal sends thanks to family and everyone who helped organise his recent surprise birthday party. It was a greatly appreciated. Special thanks to everyone who gave donations to the Rojo Rojo Childrens Orphanage in Kenya instead of bringing presents. The magnificent amount of £450 was raised and will be winging its way to Kenya shortly.
