FAMILY FUN AND OPEN DAY - At St Peter's Centre on Saturday, 11am-3pm. The annual open day is full of things to do for all the family, from a children’s musical percussion session and youth drama group with The Courtyard, to arts and crafts and community organisations. All events are free of charge. The community cafe, inSPIRE, will also be open for light lunches, refreshments and homemade cakes. A local artist is also offering the opportunity to participate in a stained glass painting workshop, from 11am- 12.45pm, or 1pm-2.45pm, at £20 per person. PLANNING FOR REAL - The parish council has organised two planning for real sessions for the people of Peterchurch to identify issues of importance to the community. The first session is at the Golden Valley community centre tomorrow (Friday) from 2.30pm to 5pm. The second session is at Peterchurch fire station on Saturday from 11am to 4pm. On Saturday there will be a mobile zoo, free refreshments and the opportunity to look around the facilities.

PUPPET SHOW - As part of the Arts Alive season, Freehand Theatre creates a memorable and reassuring journey through the woods with its use of puppetry, colour and especially composed music in Little Red You Know Who, Saturday at 2pm in St Peter’s Church. A treat for children aged three-plus and their adults. All tickets are £5, and the café will be open for afternoon tea.

GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY - On Saturday at 7.30pm, under the musical director Alan Durman, the society will present a jubilee concert. An evening of songs from the shows with a patriotic flavour will end with a Last Night of the Proms finale, including Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory. Flags will be available for waving, as will song sheets so that the audience can join in. Doors will open at 7pm. Tickets at £10 are available from Enid on 01981 550683 or on the door. CRAFTY CAFE - Crafty Cafe launched at St Peter’s Centre in Peterchurch last Wednesday with local artist Amanda Cross helping primary school children to create holiday books – a hardback book full of ideas, puzzles and plain pages for their own creations. The children enjoyed a picnic lunch while parents enjoyed a moment's peace with a bite to eat at the cafe, all followed by Shepherd’s ice cream and a play in the neighbouring park to make the most of the sun. Crafty Cafe runs throughout the summer holidays from 1pm-2.30pm each Wednesday. Places can be booked on 01981 550372 and sessions cost £5 per child including lunch and ice cream.

WORK OF ART ARRIVING AT CENTRE - Today (Thursday), St Peter’s Centre will receive a stained glass panel from the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Graham Jones work Sister Moon Mother Earth is on loan to the centre as its trophy for winning the ACE Trust and RIBA award for outstanding religious architecture. On February 23, the centre will host an evening to celebrate this award and a talk will be given by Sir Roy Strong. Doors open at 7pm, with talks beginning at 7.45pm.

CELEBRATION - St Peter’s Church was crowded for a celebration lunch for the 85th birthday of Maureen Bowran. Birthday gift donations from more than 50 guests were generously given to St Peter’s funds by Mrs Bowran who covered the expenses of the day herself. During the Holy Communion service earlier in the day, led by Rev Simon Lockett, Mrs Bowran chose the hymns, ending with Lord for the Years in thanks for her earlier life in education and for her retirement in Peterchurch, where she has been church organist for nearly 30 years.

Tricks (12) is a beautifully told, gently humorous tale of Stefek, a young boy who becomes convinced that the man who changes trains at his little local station is his absent father. BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL - On Saturday, St Peter’s will be showing films as a part of Borderlines Film Festival. At 2pm the film will be The Secret Of Kells (PG), 75 minutes. As the film is the story of the famous illuminated Book of Kells, Mrs Maureen Bowran will be mounting a small exhibition of her copies of books relating to the medieval Books of Hours. At 7.30pm see Lourdes (U), 99 minutes long, the story of Christine, an MS sufferer and religious sceptic, who sets out in hope of finding spiritual comfort or bodily cure. CHURCH SERVICES - Informal services for the whole family, including small children, are held at St Peter’s Church on the first Sunday of each month at 10am. A group of young parents organizes the service with the clergy or local ministry team member who will lead that month’s work. This month’s service, on Sunday at 10am, will be led by Rev Bob Murrin. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits are served after the service giving people the opportunity to get to know each other, especially if new to the area.

AFRICAN MUSIC - Experience beautiful, forgotten music and hear the fascinating story of one man’s journey to save a sacred harp, the biram, and the rich musical traditions of the Boudouma nomads of Niger from extinction.
