CHEESE AND CIDER FOLK EVENING - Will be held today (Thursday) at Monkland Cheese Dairy at 7.30pm. Monkland Cheese and Olivers Cider, two of Herefordshire’s leading food and drink producers have combined forces with local folk band Bandangle to put on a tasting supper of cheese and cider with music.” A sort of local feastival in an evening,” explained Mark Hindle of Monkland Cheese. This is a ticket-only event, tickets are £12 available from Monkland Cheese Dairy on 01568 720307.

BINGO - There will be a prize bingo evening in aid of Acorns Children’s Hospice in Monkland Village Hall tomorrow (friday). Eyes down at 8pm, doors open at 7pm. Everyone welcome except no children under six, please. Monkland bingo players have raised £261 for the Midlands Air Ambulance over the last few weeks, making a total of £521 sent to the charity since May.

FETE - All Saints’ Church’s annual fete is on Saturday at Beeches, Old Road, at 2pm, opened by Leominster mayor Coun Peter Macaul. There will be stalls, home made teas and Roger Willet will entertain during the afternoon with his fairground organ. If wet, the fete will be in the village hall.

SPRING SHOW - A very well supported village spring show took place in the village hall on March 17. 24 people entered nearly 300 items to be judged. Cups were won by Dee Griffiths for pot plants, Kath Morris the domestic cup, Lynn Hanley for floral art, handicrafts cup and highest number of points. Esther Morris won the art cup, Sid Lewis the cut flower cup and the photography cup, Rachel Crick won the best in show cup for a beautiful victoria sponge, Charlie Morris won the children’s cup with Charlotte and Georgina Blain runners-up. The autumn show is on September 1.

PRIZE BINGO - After a three-month break Monkland prize bingo starts again tomorrow (Friday), in the village hall. Doors open at 7pm for eyes down at 8pm. Everyone is welcome except babies or children under six.

CAROL SERVICE - On Sunday at 4pm there will be a delightful service of carols and readings, with children in the congregation helping to assemble the nativity scene. This service is followed with mince pies and sherry.

JULY FETE - The Monkland village fete was forced to transfer its venue at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions - from the Beeches to the village hall, but this did not deter or dampen the spirits of the many visitors who attended. Vicar, Christine Mundell opened the proceedings and Lucy Williams presented her with a bouquet of flowers. Trade was brisk on all stalls and refreshments enjoyed by all. Skittles, face painting and fishing the duck out of the pond proved popular, together with a delightful fairground organ playing all afternoon. The iced cake was won by Dr Jenny Barnes; bottle of whiskey by Dee Griffiths and name the scarecrow, by Olive Goodwin. An amazing total raised for church funds reached £1,110, special thanks from the vicar and the PCC goes to all stallholders and visitors alike with extra special thanks to Harry Jancey and Cyril Griffiths for all their behind the scenes works.

Monkland VILLAGE HALL - At the annual meeting Wendy Jancey was re-elected as chairman and Sally Watkins as treasurer. The committee were elected en-bloc with a new member, Holly Watkins. The chairman welcmed Holly and hopes she will be a member for as long as her grandmother, the late Elsie Underhill who served for over 40 years. Many clubs use the hall on a weekly basis. The hall will be 21 years old this year and has continued to be very well used by various organisations proving a success for all.

SPRING SHOW - The Monkland Spring Show is in the village hall on Saturday. The show has been running for 25 years and there is much talk about who will win the Lewis Perpetual Cup for the domestic section. All exhibit entries to be staged between 9.30am and 11am, then the show is open to the public for viewing and trophies from 2.30pm. Come and have a cup of tea or coffee and support this long-running event.

CHURCH FETE - Monkland church fete is on Saturday at The Beeches, Old Road, Monkland. Mayor Councillor Roger Hunt will open the proceedings at 2pm. There will be cake and bottle stalls, white elephant, book stall, refreshments, ice cream, swimming in the pool, skittles and raffles. We will be entertained by a fairground organ throughout the afternoon. Good all-round enjoyment for all the family.

SPONSORED WALK - Six adults and five children completed a sponsored walk around 16 lanes in Monkland village, in aid of the Macmillan Nurses charity. Their efforts raised a total of £705, breaking last year’s amount of £502. Well-deserved refreshments and ice-cream were waiting at Monkland Cheese Dairy. Thanks go to all walkers and sponsors for making this worthwhile event possible.

CHARITY SPONSORED WALK - The annual sponsored Macmillan Walk will take place on Saturday, starting at 2pm, and will end at Monkland Cheese Shop where a cup of tea or ice-cream awaits. All are welcome to join in this walk – children, babies, parents, grandparents and the family dog (dogs must be on a lead). The walk started in 2004 raising £80 and last year it raised £502.

COFFEE MORNING - A very successful Macmillan coffee morning was held last Friday in Monkland Village Hall where a massive £700 was raised. A friendly atmosphere prevailed throughout the busy morning as visitors drank coffee and emptied their purses for this worthwhile cause. Tables were laid with homemade cakes, preserves, fruit and vegetables, books and bargains on the white elephant stall. A huge ‘thank you’ goes to everyone who helped with and supported the event.

RIDE AND STRIDE - Many thanks go to everyone who sponsored your correspondent in the Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust ‘Ride and Stride’ cycle ride on Saturday. Blessed with excellent weather, 48 miles were completed on the day, visiting 17 churches and raising £303. Half will go towards repairs to Monkland Church.
